Award-winning Author, Speaker, Scholar & Eco-Shaman

Deborah A. Forrest, PhD, MS, MSN, BSN is a scholar, award-winning author and speaker on the topics of spirituality, dementia, grief, and the use of quantum energies for personal transformations. She brings a unique approach to the fields of clinical psychology and medicine by integrating her passion for shamanism, connection with the spirit world, deep research into the death and dying process, and her career as a registered nurse and biomedical laser researcher.

Dr. Deborah’s personal journey into the eventual work that she is now known for began around 1993, when she had a near-death experience and suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a car crash. In 1997, she was diagnosed with possible lung cancer. Unsure of her fate and facing the possibility of impending death for five long years, Dr. Deborah began to write her first book in order to preserve her acquired knowledge and wisdom for generations to come.

Over the years that followed these life-altering events, Dr. Deborah also learned to adapt to the brain changes created by her TBI. On the macro level, this drastically altered her world view; on the micro level, it created lingering deficits in language comprehension that continue to inform her writing and teachings to this day. She stresses that the importance of using concrete rather than abstract terms to describe new concepts is critical for persons living with a TBI or any other form of cognitive deficits. This is based not only on her personal experiences but her academic training during her fellowship at the University of Kentucky’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.

Dr. Forrest’s pioneering work on the connection between spirituality and dementia led to the publication of her groundbreaking and international bestselling book Symphony of Spirits: Encounters with the Spiritual Dimensions of Alzheimer’s (St. Martin’s Press, 2000). This book continues to be used by American Alzheimer’s Association chapters, as well as various other groups around the world who work with dementia clients and their families. Her follow-up book, Touch the Spirit: Connecting to the Inner World of Dementia (Butter Lamp Books, 2013) instructs readers on how to stay connected to someone who is experiencing some form of dementia. Dr. Forrest’s new title, The Cosmic River: How Living in the Flow Can Transform Your Life Beyond Your Wildest Imaginings, was released in Fall 2024. She has also authored numerous white papers, articles and book chapters on neuropsychology, spirituality, modern surgery technology and more.

Dr. Forrest’s practice as a Clinical Psychologist centered on local, state and international workshops, seminars and publications about aging, the spiritual dimensions of Alzheimer’s, grief management, and dementia caregiver compassion fatigue. Dr. Deborah earned her master’s and doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from The Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, California in 1993 and 1995. While conducting her dissertation research on the effectiveness of Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s grief treatment program, she established – with scientific proof – that Dr. Kübler-Ross’ experiential approach to grief resolution did indeed help grieving individuals reduce or eliminate the various levels of simple or complex grief they were experiencing. Graduate training workshops with the renowned Dr. Kübler-Ross further broadened Dr. Deborah’s understanding and empathy for the many facets of one’s grief.

As an International Biomedical Laser Researcher and Physician Trainer, Dr. Forrest is included in several prominent lists, such as Who’s Who Researchers in the World and Who’s Who Women Leaders of Achievement for her cutting-edge research on the safe use of biomedical lasers in surgical/operating room theaters around the world. She acknowledges that her clinical work and research in this area initially informed her understanding about quantum physics.

Dr. Forrest earned her Community Mental Health nursing degree from The Pennsylvania State University in 1978. She worked in various nursing positions across the U.S., including operating room staff nurse, OR supervisor, associate director of surgery, geriatric staff nurse and adolescent psychiatric nurse before retiring from nursing in 2014. Dr. Forrest has also held various faculty and teaching positions throughout the decades at Tulane University Medical School, Emory University Medical School and School of Nursing, and the University of Kentucky.

In 1991, while serving as a contract nurse in a special geriatric ward, her Native American and Afro-Caribbean nursing colleagues spoke to her about their connections to the spirit world. These interactions were a game-changer for Dr. Forrest, as she, too, has been gifted since birth with the ability to communicate with individuals on an unseen soul level (her Celtic ancestors possessed this gift, as well). This intuitive capability became evident to her colleagues, and they proceeded to build on it in the ward, thereby giving Dr. Deborah opportunities to learn for herself how to integrate the disciplines of science and spirit.

Dr. Deborah’s immersion into shamanism is the culmination of her career-long efforts to align science with the natural, mystical world of spirit and consciousness. Having studied intensively to become certified as an eco-shaman, Dr. Deborah’s shamanic training taught her how to reverently enter the hidden realms of the spirit world in order to address the spiritual aspects of a client’s presenting issue(s). Depending on the individual’s needs, she performs ceremonies for soul retrievals, lost power and/or the removal of spiritual blockages. As an eco-shaman, Dr. Deborah aligns with the energy of the land and the ancestors to remove trauma footprints from any land/earth that has been exposed to environmental damage from events such as tornadoes, hurricanes and draughts.
